Other than Antananarivo, Madagascar has no other Large Cities.  Diego-Suarez, former French garrison town and capital of the north, is the gateway to the northern reserves.  This is the capitol of Madagascar's northern most province - Antsiranana, which means "Port".  This is quite apt as this town overlooks of one of the worlds most beautiful bay and deep-water harbors.  A Ring of mountains surrounds this town.  An interesting fact is that this town is the gateway to both Montagne d'Ambre and Ankarana National Parks.

The population of this town is quite cosmopolitan (including Sakalava, Antakarana, French, Arabs, Chinese and Comoriens) and quite welcoming (as are most of the Malagasy People).

Ramena Beach is located on a beautiful bay next to a fishing town 18km by paved road northeast of Diego-Suarez. It is a local favorite with fine sand running along rows of coconut trees. The route between Diego-Saurez and Ramena Beach is home to many baobab trees.  The wild life includes various bird species and Brown Lemurs that are, like so many other creatures on this island, totally unique.

It is from this region of Madagascar that we have recently received some of the most beautiful polished amethyst crystal pieces.  These are amongst the brightest and clearest we have ever had.  More spectacular than that however are the inclusions of dark purple amethyst, smokey wisps and water bubbles.  To the untrained eye they may appear very much like Brandburg Crystals (which are pretty much legendary these days).
