Zomba MountainZomba, a small town in the southern region, was the capital of Malawi until 1975 and was the seat of parliament until 1994.  Zomba is a relatively low-lying plateau interrupted by a number of large mountains. Zomba Mountain is a hikers paradise with plentiful birds, small mammals and offering wonderful views across to Mulanje Mountain and Mozambique.

Zomba Mountain is an ecological treasure in the heart of Malawi.  Rising some 3000 feet from the surrounding plain.  The cool climate and high rainfall offers a different habitat to that in the savanna habitat below.

Zomba Plateau is unique. A great slab of a mountain rising to 6000 feet, it has vast tracts of cedar, pine and cypress but elsewhere the vegetation is wild and mixed. The plateau top is criss-crossed by streams and there are tumbling waterfalls and still lakes. There are driveable tracks right round the top from which are views of such splendor that they were described in colonial times as “the best in the British Empire”. Whether walking or driving, there is always something to see. Wildlife includes leopards although sightings are rare. More in evidence are giant butterflies and, on the lower slopes, baboons. Birdlife includes the long-crested eagle and the augur buzzard.  Zomba Plateau, the country's oldest forest reserve, has Mulanje cedar, cypress and Mexican pine.
